DETAILS OF ON GOING PROJECTS
1. "National Retinoblastoma Project" (ICMR)-Guwahati
Site, Centre code 04 since April 2009 to March 2014, just completed
Principal investigator= Dr. (Mrs) Kasturi Bhattacherjee
The overall aims of the research are to start a national retinoblastoma registry where retinoblastoma cases will be uniformly recorded form various centers treating retinoblastoma. A retinoblastoma registry form has been designed to include all aspects of retinoblastoma like child identification data, residence of family, presenting illness, the staging using a common staging system , the examination under anesthesia, family history of cancer and retinoblastoma . The uniform histopathology of the enucleated eye or post- chemotherapy enucleated eye will be studied. The management how it was done by the multiple modalities is also being recorded . Follow up and survival of the patients is also being recorded.
The importance of research proposal is that RB is a curable disease.
Pediatric cancers are emerging a national priority as they are
curable in nature. The epidemiology of the disease has to be studied
and this will enable us to identify the research areas in Retinoblastoma
and especially plan strategy to decrease the mortality, decrease
enucleation and decrease the incidence of retinoblastoma over
a decade .
2. On -going "Ophthalmic Telepathology
Project" between Sankara Nethralaya, Chennai and Sri Sankaradeva

Telecommunication technologies offer new ways of delivering health
care to individuals in remote communities and usefulness of telemedicine
is increasingly being studies for verity of medical conditions.
Telemedicine technologies are applicable in ophthalmology, because
standard ophthalmic instruments can be modified to capture and
store images that can be digitalized and transmitted for expert
evaluation.
Therefore, objectives of telepathlogy are to make service assessable
and affordable by reducing travel cost and time for the patients
to give pathologic at remote places access to specialized opinion
from experts, to minimize the delay in diagnosis and help them
share their experiences and tom help in training and research.

The benefit expected by introduction of this telepathology unit
are better medical service, more distributed speclialization,

project "To train and develop infrastructure of molecular
ophthalmic pathology and rapid diagnosis of ocular infection in
a ophthalmic institute of Assam"

Objectives
A. Research Component with training Component
To understand the pathobiology of retinoblastoma in the following
aspects
a. To study the expression of multidrug resistant proteins Pgp
by immminohistochemistry.
b. To study the expression of human papilloma Virus 16 and 18
genome in retinoblastoma by nested PCR and insitu hybridization
c. to investigate the cell cycle proteins in retinoblastoma.
B. To train technical personel
In ophthalmic pathology, microbiology techniques and in rapid
diagnosis of ophthalmic infectious agents.
C. To develop infrastructure
For ophthalmic pathology laboratory to enable the personel at
institute to do both routine and molecular ophthalmic pathology
and also enable them to do molecular microbiology for rapid diagnostics
in ocular infections.

4. DBT funded project:
Proteomics based identification and validation of urinary biomarkers
for the Age - Related Macular Degeneration
Principal investigator= Dr. Harsha Bhattacharjee
Recent advances in the treatment of coroidal neovascualrization
(CMV) in age related macular degeneration (AMD) have dramatically
improved the outcome in this late stage complications. However,
they are still remains no effective treatment for geographic atrophy
and apart from general lifestyle advice, there are no specific
interventions to slow or reverse progression from early AMD to
late stages of the disease. Guymer et al [Identification of urinary
biomarkers for age related macular degeneration invest Ophthalmol
Vis. Sci. 2011 Apr 15] have identified urinary pro-inflammatory
cytokines, transforming growth factor-ß1, Macrophage Chemo
attractant protein-1 and C3 a-desArg, as potential noninvasive
biomarkers for monitoring AMD.
We would like to validate these urinary biomarkers in Indian AMD
patients. The validation of the urinary biomarker would be done
at three institute - at Sri Sankaradeva Nethralaya, Sankara Netralaya,
IOB Bangalore.
5. Prevalance and causes
of amblyopia in children aged 6 months to 16 years in kamrup (metro)
district". Recently started under ICMR

Amblyopia is a scourge in the society, and an important public
health problem because of the irreparable visual loss it causes
if the child is not treated at the proper time. It affects the
social, economical, behavioral, educational, physical and psychological
aspects of a community. The aim of this project is to determine
the prevalence, highlight the magnitude of the disease and find
out the causes of amblyopia in children below 16 years of age.
Also to aid the government to implement health care policy like
early vision screening which is currently hampered by a lack of
basic information regarding the true prevalence of these diseases
and the best screening approaches.
6. Srimanta Sankaradeva University of Health Sciences(SSUHS) sponsored
project ' Association between Structural and refractive component
of eye and Diabetic Retinopathy'

Objective: The objectives of the present study are to find out

i. Incidence of diabetic retinopathy in the study population.
ii. Refractive status of the eye affected with diabetic retinopathy.

iii. Association between structural and refractive component of
eye and diabetic retinopathy.
Summary
Diabetic Retinopathy is an important cause of blindness. Individuals with higher axial length of the eye (myopia) are observed to be at low risk of development of Diabetic Retinopathy. The exact association between myopia and its structural components is under evaluation. The aim of the research is to find out the incidence of various refractive status of the eye in patients with diabetic retinopathy and association between axial length (AL), anterior chamber depth (ACD) and refractive (Lens biometry and corneal curvature) components and diabetic retinopathy. Student't' test and multivarient analysis will be done for testing the statistical significance of various incidence and associations respectively.

are to find out -
To determine the blood Glucose fasting and post prandial, HBA1c
levels, Cholestrol, triglyceride, HDL-C, LDL-C and apolipoproteins
A1 and apo b and Apo-B to Ap-A1 ratio in adult Diabetic patients
with Diabetic retinopathy (DR).

Compare the association of the above parameters with clinical
presentation of DR and evaluate the above parameters as predictive
risk factors.
Summary
Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is a multi- factorial microvascular complication occurring in Diabetic patients which may lead to different degrees of visual impairment and at times to blindness.
Our aim is to conduct a prospective cross sectional study of the glycemic control (fasting and post prandial blood sugar, HBA1c), Cholestrol, triglyceride, HDL-C, LDL-C, VLDL and Apolipoproteins A1 and B in three groups of adult patients - diabetic with DR and without DR and patients without Diabetes mellitus (DM) or hypertension attending Sri Sankardeva Nethralaya, Guwahati during the first year. A thorough history will be taken. Data will be compiled and analysed in the second year.
This will be the first study of this kind from this region which will provide a data to work on. Considering the rapid spread of global epidemic of Diabetes mellitus and incidence of DR it will help in controlling risk factors identified.
